First Fundraiser!

The Bearettes will participate in the Belk Charity Day ticket sale.   Each student is encouraged to sell 20 ticket coupons for $5.00 each:  the ensemble gets 100% of the proceeds.  Each ticket is good for 20 - 50% off items throughout any store in the Belk chain.  Furthermore, ticket holders get $5.00 off any single item in their shopping basket, so they get their donation back!    We have a total of 1000 tickets to sell! by Saturday, November 15  Remember: the tickets can be sold to people anywhere along the Belk chain of stores (not just Charlottesville).  Get your tickets from Mr. Jennings in rehearsal on Wednesday.

Strategies for selling well:

  • Sell only to people you know: DO NOT go door to door

  • Make a list of family members and friends who live in Charlottesville

  • Check the Belk "Store Locator" to see where other stores are.

Unsold tickets must be returned to Mr. Jennings no later then Thursday, November 13, 2008, so they can be sold in the store.

Mr. Jennings needs volunteers to work with him in the local Charlottesville Belk on Saturday, November 15.  He'll bring bagels!

Parents Meeting:

Thank you for a great session last evening!  Mr. Jennings feels very good about the energy behind funding the Ohio trip!

Attendance:

Parents, please be sure to get the women to all rehearsals.  If a child will be in school that day, she should attend rehearsal as well, even as a passive observer.  Thank you!

Date added!

Mr. Jennings has updated the calendar to reflect the teacher work day on Monday, October 20:  There is a voluntary rehearsal from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM.  If you are in town that day and have no unavoidable conflicts, plan on attending.  Now that the Washington DC performance has been confirmed, we need every ounce of rehearsal possible!

If you have ideas, please come and share them!  I'm just a music teacher, I know there are folks who have far, far better ideas than I!

Things to prepare:

Mr. Jennings really wants to get "Carol of the Bells" and "White Christmas" rolling this week, as well as "Shenandoah," "Water is Wide," and "Sto Mi e Milo."

We should hear from the folks in D.C. this week.  Keep your fingers crossed!

Did you check the website?

Mr. Jennings' cat, Sophie, was known to the friendly folks at the SPCA as "Pandora."

The Omni Hotel to Host the Bearettes!

Mr. Jennings received confirmation this afternoon that our own Charlottesville's Omni Hotel will host the Bearettes women's chorus in concert! The concert will take place on Monday, December 15 (this is a change). Mr. Jennings will need a great many parent volunteers to move materials, set up, et cetera. Please contact him at your earliest convenience: cjennings@bearettes.net

If you happen to have needs in the hotel-area, please consider doing our sponsor a turn in kind, and mention their generosity where the young women are concerned!

Rehearsal Media

White Christmas and Wassail, Wassail! are now available at the Rehearsal Media page.

Don't forget! No rehearsal Friday, October 10

Contest: "Design a Logo"

Mr. Jennings is sponsoring a logo design contest. The current logo needs upgrading and doesn't really work too well on our t-shirts. The official rules:

  1. Entries should be no larger than 8.5 x 11" (notebook paper)

  2. Entries must be by current Burley students only

  3. Entries may include both images and text

  4. Entries must have the students name on the back, NOT on the front (for judging)

  5. Entries may not include copyrighted images or slogans

  6. Entries must be submitted to Mr. Jennings no later than October 24

The winning entry will be given to a professional graphic artist for use in our new 2008 Bearettes logo!

The winning artist will receive $30.00 off the cost of their Spring Trip!

Today's "Did you check the website?" Quiz:

Check out the new "DSLAP" image (Don't Sing Like APre-schooler) and tell Mr. J what you think... It may be added to the store as early as Tuesday!(Link)

I've also added a "best time to plant a tree" quote graphic. Check it out.

Not all Fridays are "Bagel Day"

So eat a good breakfast, you.

Christmas Idol

Mr. Jennings has decided to prepare Audrey Snyder's arrangement of "White Christmas" for Z95.1's contest. He'll have the rehearsal tracks for it, and for "Wassail, Wassail!" available soon.

Holiday CD

Dates are being sought to have a formal recording made of the current performance book. Keep an eye on the calendar, as this will (hopefully) be one of our strongest fundraisers for Ohio. The sooner we are able to perform the book, the earlier the recording date.

Bearettes Parent Meeting

The Bearettes and their parents are invited to a meeting in the Burley auditorium on Wednesday, October 15, at 6:30 PM. The agenda has a single item: find ways to pay for the girls' trip to Ohio in April. I really want to attempt to get the entire trip underwritten, but it will require the coordinated efforts of many more folks!

Rehearsals

Rehearsals have begun and I am very pleased with the maturity and musicianship of the ensemble, even at this early stage. Please be sure to check the calendar often for due dates and changes.

Days off

The women have a few days off coming up; please don't come to school early if you don't have to! The dates are:

  • Friday, October 10

  • Monday, November 3

  • Wednesday, November 5

  • Friday, November 7

Voice Lessons!

Veteran educator and performer Mrs. Madeline Holly-Sales is offering voice lessons at Burley Middle School. Please see her page here.

Bearettes Store

We are seeking new options for revenue in order to help to underwrite the Ohio trip in April. Check out our "Bearettes Boutique." It's not officially open, as we are tweaking some of the designs and materials. We get a portion of every sale made!

September 12, 2008

Auditions

Auditions have been completed and the list is up! We've had a record turnout, and the number of talented young women has boosted the ranks even further. We have nearly 50 qualified young ladies rehearsing to wear the dresses in December! Thank you to all of the women who auditioned, and special thanks to clinician Madeline Holly-Sales for her invaluable help!

Rehearsal!

Our first rehearsal is Monday, September 15, at 8:00 AM sharp. Have a pencil, and be sure to be on time!

September 7, 2008

Thank you!

Special thanks to all parents and Burley staff who supported our dance this past Friday. You folks are amazing; I really appreciate your contribution and effort. Special thanks to Trish Rintels for organizing the parent volunteers and to Evelyn Wilson for taking over the clean-up phase!

Raising money

We are looking for opportunities to underwrite the ladies' trip to Ohio University in April. Some suggestions have been grants via Wal-Mart, Sam's Club, Wal-Mart Distribution, Target, the Mockingbird Foundation, and Dave Matthews' "Bama Works Foundation." If you are particularly adept at writing grants, or just happen to be Dave Matthews, or happen to have a spare $20000 sitting around (est.), please let me know as soon as possible. :) cjennings@bearettes.net

September 3, 2008

Auditions

Bearettes auditions are underway. Parents, please double check audition times with your children so you can make arrangements to drop them off and or pick them up in a timely fashion. There are currently no slots available (out of -80-!), so missing an audition requires a separate appointment with Mr. Jennings.

Dance!

The choral department is hosting the first dance of the year this Friday, September 05, 2008, as a fund-raiser towards this year's projects, such as purchasing new risers and getting the Bearettes to Ohio University in April. If you can chaperone and you haven't already contacted Mr. Jennings to let him know, please do so at your earliest convenience.

Uniform fittings

Once the ensemble personnel have been selected, we'll need Moms with measuring and fitting experience to help with performance dress assignments. Please let Mr. Jennings know if you have time to help!
